Most Maryland cosmetology schools divide their programs into classroom and practical phases. In the first to hours of your education, you will likely be in the classroom learning from lectures and textbooks. Option 2 — Complete 24 months as a registered apprentice in a licensed Maryland beauty salon, with at least 20 hours of training per week. If you choose this option, your apprentice license will be limited to one year, plus two one-year renewals. A senior cosmetologist that is licensed in Maryland must provide your training and sign your application and sponsorship form.
Training reports must be sent to the Board on a monthly basis. In order to become a licensed senior cosmetologist in Maryland, you must complete two years of experience as a licensed Maryland Cosmetologist and pass the Senior Cosmetologist Exam and the Cosmetologist Exam see Step 2 below.
When you are enrolled in a cosmetology program in Maryland, your instructors will tell you when you are ready to take the Maryland State Board of Cosmetology Exam. This usually occurs near the end of your hour program, once you have completed about hours of training.
At this time, while you are still a student, you will be allowed to take the theory portion of the exam. Once you have completed your entire hours of cosmetology training, you may take the practical portion of the exam. Salon permits must be renewed every two years. The Board automatically mails renewal packets and instructions to licensees approximately 60 days prior to the expiration date of the current license.
If a permit holder does not receive the renewal information or a paper application is needed, the permit holder must call or e-mail barbers. Contact the original state where you have trained and taken an examination practical and theory , and request that a certification of your licensure be sent to the Maryland Board.
