Up close and personal we are given six programmable buttons on the wheel itself. Right above the hub is a set of LEDs that will most likely be used as a shift light in future game releases. I am not aware of any current titles that support this. The all metal paddles are nestled behind the wheel. I wanted to highlight the paddle placement behind the wheel more closely. I have had my hands on a few other wheel combos and have never cared for where the paddles were situated.
Logitech has put them exactly where I like them which is nice and tight. There is plenty of room for your hands yet you are not reaching to use them. This is critical when playing a rally sim, since one missed shift can be the end of your winning stage time.
Underneath the body of the wheel we see the dual clamp mounting system. With a deep body and the two strong screw down clamps, I had no problem getting it mounted and firmly anchored on my keyboard tray. For those of you that want a mechanical mount, there are dual recessed threaded nuts that will accept a bolt and will more permanently mount your wheel. Also take note of the channels recessed into the plastic to route all wires tightly and safely through the bottom of the base when you have it mounted down.
The six speed shifter is the next item up on our list. From the leather shifter boot to the simulated shape of an automotive console, we get a real car feel from the design and implementation. The shifter moves smoothly and solidly clicks into each gear. To access a reverse gear all you do is push down on the shifter itself and shift it into 6th gear.
Again, this type of shifting is used on quite a few production automobiles so it is a natural motion as well. These issues have since been fixed, and there are no outstanding or otherwise recurring issues with the PC drivers for the G The newest generation of consoles XB1 and PS4 have unique security chips inside of them, which do not directly support the Logitech G27 steering wheel.
As for modifications — there are various converters and adapters which can be purchased independently. These claim to enable the G27 to work with the newer generation of consoles. The only real problem is that the response time is significantly lessened, something which can greatly affect gameplay and bring the enjoyment factor way down.
Do your research, and see if there is a converter out there for you. Theoretically, the G27 could be brought up to grade. However, in order to do that, Logitech would have to do the following: reach out to Sony and Microsoft, request a license, recall all of their G27 units, replace a lot of the electronics, and basically make them all into a refurbished G27 wheels.
It would be less expensive to produce a new wheel, which is pretty much what Logitech did. Assetto Corsa and Logitech G29 Tonight. So much fun!
As for the older generation of game consoles XB and PS3 — both of these models have already been discontinued by the manufacturer in , and replaced with the newer models.
It is only a matter of time. In order to get the G29 to work on an XB, there is the option of obtaining a converter. Once again, this could affect your gameplay and add some measure of frustration to your life, or you may just get lucky and find an adapter or converter which fits your system like a glove, and performs astonishingly well.
You never know, and because of that it is always a gamble. What I do like is playing racing games. I am no expert by any means, but I get around.
Using steering wheels is part of the fun. I was young, but I remember it well. I was pretty jealous of him, to say the least. Most of us are not race car drivers, and heck — most of us would not want to be race car drivers!
Maybe for a day, sure, but those guys are just a little crazy. I am all for not being normal, but all things considered, you have to admit it is a rather dangerous calling.
